Beyond Greening of
Outdoor Pocket Space & Visual Arts
Euphen Wong Solo Painting Show +

Caf¨¦ Pocket Space Redesign
With the same passion for art and food, local visual artist
Euphen Wong joins catering star 2Rooms Caf¨¦ for the painting
show from February 4 to March 2, 2007 at 2Rooms Caf¨¦, Happy
Valley, Hong Kong.
Why
Viridis?
Viridis,
the Latin word for green, is used in the botanic names for
worldwide plants. Green, the leaf color, is a symbolic color
for nature and environmental issues. This event is to look
beyond this classic color, and go further into nature through
pocket outdoor space design, visual arts and food/ beverage
creation.
Wong
experiments her knowledge in plants, space perception and
love for animals to enrich her paintings and transform pocket
spaces. Nature, to her, is the best source of inspiration.
The dramatic colors of plants, their forms and behaviors are
always beyond the imagination of ordinary perceptions.
2Rooms
combines its quality-food philosophy and their artistic impression
on nature to designs a special drink during the exhibition
period. Together with Wong, the founder of 2Rooms went through
a long discussion process before they finalized on how to
transform their store room like tong lau back alley into an
enjoyable space.
Face
Lifting the Pocket Outdoor Space
The
tong lau back alley space of the caf¨¦ is elongated and dark.
Much of the area does not receive direct sunlight. Therefore,
it is natural to use it just as a storage space. However,
Wong thinks outdoor space in Hong Kong is too rare to be used
like this. Given careful treatment, it can be a perfect place
for short breaks in the packed Happy Valley district. By using
shade-loving plants, a 30 feet long wall painting, art works
and a low budget, the narrow space becomes an attraction for
caf¨¦ lovers and it is still easy for storage.
To
highlight the caf¨¦ home-like and natural style, Wong designed
a traditional Chinese village bench made of timber from old
ships and put plants in Chinese cooking clay pots to go with
the new space.
